Surrendering With Herp Habitat

Each and every animal receives our full care and attention

We’re currently limiting new intakes due to high surrender volume. You’re welcome to join our waitlist, but please reach out to a qualified veterinarian if your animal has urgent health needs.

We are currently unable to take in: aquatic turtles, large lizards, and snakes over 6ft.

Surrender Process:

  • Fill out a surrender form
  • We will reach out to let you know if we are able to take them in
  • We will then set up a time and place to meet up with you so that you can drop them off with us

Herp Habitat is not a rehabilitation facility and surrendering is not a substitution for providing an animal with veterinary care. However, we do understand that life can be unpredictable and we want to help provide care to as many reptiles in need as we can. We accept a limited amount of sick animals based on resources available, urgency, and our own assessment of their needs. Please fill out the appropriate form below.

Regular Surrender

For animals eating and active in generally good health, or with very minor concerns.

Surrendering w/ Health Concerns

For animals with current health concerns that need to be addressed.

Why Choose Us?

Choosing us means that you’re choosing a rescue that treats every reptile with the compassion and respect they deserve. We believe in individualized care, taking the time to understand each animal’s unique needs and providing them with the space and rehabilitation necessary to thrive.

We hope you understand that we take in each and every surrender with lots of care and consideration. If we do not have the space and/or resources available at the moment and we place you on a temporary waitlist, this is because we refuse to take in animals that we are unprepared for. We also refuse to take away needed time and resources from the animals already in our care. Because of this, you can trust that once a surrender comes through our doors, they get our full care and attention.

We also go beyond rehoming by educating adopters on species-specific care and offering ongoing support. At our rescue, your reptile is not just rehomed, they are they are set up in their forever homes with the tools they need to thrive.

We are currently a foster-based organization and do not have a public storefront for drop-offs. However, we rely on generous donations to keep our rescue running and to provide surrendered animals with the food, husbandry, and medical care they need. Please consider supporting us so we can continue accepting surrenders and helping animals in need.

OUR RESCUE DOES NOT TAKE IN WILDLIFE!

Wildlife refers to any native animals found in the wild within the State of Wisconsin. This includes, but is not limited to, wild snakes, turtles, lizards, frogs, salamanders, and other species naturally occurring in the region.

For help with wildlife reach out to Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Wisconsin Humane Society or another wildlife rescue.

Adopt, Don't Shop

Adopting from us means giving a reptile a second chance while making an ethical choice. Many reptiles in big-name pet stores come from inhumane breeding facilities or are wild-caught, which harms wild populations and leads to stressed, unhealthy animals. These stores prioritize profit over animal care, often sending pets home with unprepared owners to make a sale. We truly prioritize the well-being of every reptile, ensuring they are rehabilitated and matched with adopters who are educated and ready to provide proper care. Choose adoption for a healthier, more humane start to pet ownership.
